WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY AND HOW IS IT USEFUL?

Aromatherapy is the treatment and prevention of physical and spiritual problems (in the broadest sense) using natural aromas of plant origin.

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. It is sometimes called essential oil therapy. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils to improve the health of body, mind and spirit. It improves physical and emotional health.
Aromatherapy is considered both an art and a science. Recently, aromatherapy has gained more recognition in the fields of science and medicine.

How long has aromatherapy been around?

People have been using aromatherapy for thousands of years. Ancient cultures in China, India, Egypt and elsewhere made resins, balms and oils using components from aromatic plants. These natural substances have been used for medicinal and religious purposes. They were known to have both physical and psychological benefits.
The distillation of essential oils is attributed to the Persians in the 10th century, although the practice may have been in use before then. Information on essential oil distillation was published in Germany in the 16th century. French physicians recognised the potential of essential oils for the treatment of diseases in the 19th century.
In medicine, physicians began to use essential oils in the 19th century and focused on the use of chemical medicines. However, French and German physicians still recognised the role of natural essential oils in the treatment of disease.

The term "aromatherapy" was coined by the French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in a book published in 1937. The book discusses the use of essential oils in the treatment of health disorders.
