Fatigue, lack of concentration, feelings of hopelessness, increased irritability and apathy. Sound familiar? These feelings have plagued people throughout the ages, but no one knew what they were until 1984 when Norman Rosenthal first described seasonal affective disorder, or more simply, winter (light-deprivation) depression. He also suggested one of the effective treatment methods - specialized light therapy lamps. In the past, they were only available and purchased through healthcare providers, but now light bulbs are available to everyone.
WHAT IS A HEALING LIGHT LAMP?
Light therapy involves sitting in front of specialized light therapy lamps with less than 10,000 lux of illumination. These lamps are designed to emit a lot of light that mimics the sun. The sun produces two essential hormones, melatonin and serotonin, which adjust our mood. Melatonin regulates our regeneration, rest processes, and serotonin determines a good mood. Our body cannot produce two hormones at the same time, so serotonin is converted into melatonin during metabolism.
ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECT WITH LIGHT THERAPY
The retina of our eyes contains light-sensitive cells that distinguish between light and dark and know what to do accordingly. With light, the retina of the eye receives a signal to produce serotonin, and when it gets dark, it begins to convert it into melatonin - this is how the production of these two hormones turns in a circle. Sitting in front of a light therapy lamp for 20-30 minutes each morning replaces some of the lost sunlight. Light stimulates the brain to produce less of the hormones that make us sleepy and more of those that positively affect our mood and energy.
What kind of therapeutic lamps are there?
There are various types of light lamps, from small table lamps to wall lamps. Some people prefer light alarms that gradually illuminate the bedroom upon waking, while others prefer intense light for a certain amount of time per day.
Rectangular lamp
We can't always afford to sit in front of a lamp for 20-30 minutes, so thin, rectangular lamps with a removable or collapsible stand are designed for the modern man. You can easily pack them up and take them to work or on vacation to keep your spirits up. One of the most popular and convenient lamps is the light therapy lamp L1. This tool has a timer with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minute settings available at the touch of a button. You just need to select the desired time interval and save it. The L1 light therapy lamp is popular for its flexibility, as it adjusts not only the time, but also its brightness: from 30 to 100 percent.

Natural spectrum bulbs for light therapy
Although the benefits of spectrum bulbs have not been fully studied, some people with seasonal depression and those who have tried them report that full-spectrum bulbs with an intensity of at least 10,000 lux have helped them. The diffused light lifts the mood and helps regulate the rhythm of the day. These lamps can be used as table lamps or home interior details.
Blue light lamps for therapeutic light
Studies have shown that blue light has a positive effect on us in relation to seasonal depression, so those who do not like bright light very much can choose blue light. But blue light is addictive, just like phone and computer screens, and should be limited. Too much blue light interferes with getting a good night's sleep and rest.
Timer light for light therapy
A timer light or light alarm clock is very useful for those who struggle to get up in the morning and cannot start their day productively. It illuminates the room little by little according to the set time and thus helps the body to wake up. It is not advisable to use these lamps as night lamps, because the light can become very bright too quickly and you will not be able to fall asleep.
The loss of light during the winter and autumn seasons affects many people, but instead of various medications, these times we can buy "a little sun" and help ourselves stay active and happy.
